The 2016 BWF Dubai World Superseries Finals 2016 will start on December 14, which will also serve as a prestigious season-ending of this year’s 12 Superseries tournaments circuit. The top 8 of each disciplines in the Destination Dubai Ranking already qualified for this tournament. World’s top badminton players target to win the USD 1 Million total prize money.
This Superseries Finals tournament was inaugurated in 2007 and started to compete since 2008. Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan (Men’s Doubles) are the only Indonesian players who have won this tournament. They won it twice, in 2013 and last year. For the 2016 edition, Indonesia will have two pairs of Men’s Doubles, one pair of Women’s Doubles and two pairs of Mixed Doubles. Unfortunately, no Indonesian singles qualified.
Men’s Doubles will be represented by two young pairs: Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, ranked 4th in Destination Dubai Ranking, and Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi right below the former. Marcus/Kevin are having a good year, in which they’ve won 3 Superseries tournaments (India, Australian and China Opens). Meanwhile, Angga/Ricky achieved two Superseries runners-up in India and Australian Opens, which, interestingly enough, won by Marcus/Kevin.
Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polii will be the only representative for Women’s Doubles. They secured the ticket to Dubai by sitting on 6th place in the Destination Dubai Ranking. Nitya/Greysia won Singapore Open this year following a victory from Japanese pair Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi due to injury.
Olympic champions Tontowi Ahmad/Lilyana Natsir (ranked 5th) and Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto (ranked 6th) will represent Indonesia in Mixed Doubles. Tontowi/Lilyana in a red hot form after winning two consecutive tournaments: China and Hongkong Opens. They won three Superseries tournaments in total this year and surely hungry for more glory. While Praveen/Debby won the prestigious All England this year and recently earned a runner-up place in Hongkong Open, playing against their seniors.
This tournament is surely a tough one with top players competing. Let’s hope for the best to Indonesian representatives, to be in the same group as Ahsan/Hendra as Dubai Superseries Finals champions.
